Ancient Egypt, that is how long pleated dresses have existed for. When I think of a pleated dress, the first thing that comes to my mind is the scene from The Seven Year Itch, where Marilyn Monroe’s pleated dress is being flapped around by the subway vent. In our days, the pleated skirts come in different color shades like silver, rose gold and emerald green. The return of the pleated skirts made a huge buzz all around the world and it is no surprise. Firstly, the longer hemline ( dress below the knee) and entire shape of the pleated dress gives it the ability to show off enough glam while still upholding a level of modesty at the same time.
Second of all, these skirts go with just about anything and so making it an easy trend to pull off. More so, it was actually Gucci’s iterations that first caught the fashion crowd’s eyes with the new shiny gold and green pleated skirts that quickly sold out, encouraging them to design more metallic midi skirts.
The queen of shabby chic is no other than the famous Alexa Chung who made a bold statement wearing a silver pleated midi skirt and pairing it with a gaminesque oversized sweater in pale blue. Separately the pieces seem odd but the overall effect on her was pretty enchanting, blending the flash of the metallic skirt with the coziness of the knit. I believe that outfit brought out the height of this chic queen.
